Cuatro cosas que los manabitas y los expatriados deben saber el uno del otro.

Vivir con personas de diferentes culturas puede ser difícil por los malentendidos, pero también puede ser extremadamente agradable y productivo. Entre las causas de la comprensión intercultural, he elegido cuatro categorías en las que las diferencias y expectativas culturales pueden causar confusión.

Primer contacto: para los expatriados; la gran mayoría de manabitas son honestos y serviciales y respetarán su privacidad. Desafortunadamente, algunas de las personas que se acercan a usted sin invitación quieren algo de usted y pueden causar problemas. Necesita aprender a notar la diferencia.

Para los manabitas: muchos de los expatriados que ve en las calles y las empresas parecen perdidos, desconfiados y acelerados. ¡Lo son! Pero están aquí porque quieren aprender, y  necesitaron coraje, y la mayoría de ellos están abiertos a cualquier contacto con ecuatorianos pacíficos. Incluso "¿Can I help you?" es un buen comienzo.

Religión - Para los expatriados; más del 90% de los ecuatorianos se identifican como católicos, y toman en serio su religión. Sea cual sea su religión, será bienvenido en sus hermosas e históricas iglesias y catedrales.

Para los manabitas: los expatriados traen consigo una amplia variedad de religiones, incluidas muchos tipos de cristianos, judíos, musulmanes, hindúes, mormones, animistas y otras. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de sus culturas, la religión se considera un asunto privado o personal que no es común en la conversación informal.

Tiempo: para los expatriados: desafortunadamente después de 48 años visitando y viviendo en América Latina, todavía no puedo explicar "la hora ecuatoriana". Ciertas cosas comienzan más o menos a tiempo: películas, autobuses interprovinciales, horario de atención al público, eventos deportivos televisados. Otros eventos, invitaciones y citas siguen una fórmula oscura y compleja que todavía tengo que descifrar.

Para los Manabitas: en general, cuando un expatriado dice que le encontrará en un lugar determinado en un momento determinado, estará allí puntualmente. Si desea que continúe su amistad o sus negocios, también debería hacerlo.

Idiomas - Para los expatriados: APRENDA ESPAÑOL. Nada es más importante para tener una buena vida en su nuevo hogar. Los locales le ayudarán y le respetarán solo porque lo está intentando. Todavía cometo muchos errores (después de 40 años) pero no dejo que eso me detenga.

Para los Manabitas: APRENDA INGLÉS. Cualquiera que sea su profesión, nivel educativo o creencias políticas, aprender un poco de inglés le abrirá puertas y le permitirá comunicarse con nuevas personas.

Estas son solo algunas de las muchas diferencias culturales fascinantes que los expatriados traen consigo y experimentan aquí. En el futuro podemos explorar otras, como propinas, quejas, celebraciones y sentido del humor, así como los perfiles de algunos ex-pats típicamente inusuales.

Four things Manabitas and Ex-pats should know about each other

Living with people from different cultures can be difficult because misunderstandings are common, but it can also be extremely enjoyable and productive. In the cause of cross-cultural understanding I have chosen six categories in which cultural differences and expectations can cause confusion.

First Contact - For the ex-pats; the great majority of Manabitas are honest and helpful and will respect your privacy. Unfortunately, some of the people who come up to you uninvited want something from you and can cause problems. You need to learn to tell the difference.

For the Manabitas; many of the ex-pats you see in the streets and businesses look lost, nervous and accelerado. They are! But they are here because they want to learn, and it took courage, and most of them are open to any contact with safe-looking Ecuadorians. Even “Can I help you?” is a good start.

Religion - For the ex-pats; over 90% of the Ecuadorians identify as Catholic, and they take their religion seriously. Whatever your own religion you will be welcome in their gorgeous and historic churches and cathedrals.

For the Manabitas; the ex-pats bring with them a wide variety of religions including many types of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Mormons, Animists and others. However, in the majority of their cultures religion is considered a private area which is not common in casual conversation

Time - For the ex-pats. Sorry, after 48 years visiting and living in Latin America, I still can’t explain “la hora ecuadoriana”. Certain things start on time, more or less: movies, interprovincial buses, posted business hours, televised sporting events. Other invitations and appointments follow some obscure and complex formula which I have yet to decipher.

For the Manabitas: In general, when an ex-pat says they will meet you at a certain place at a certain time, they will be there.  If you want their continued friendship or business, you should be too.

Language - For the ex-pats; LEARN SPANISH. Nothing is more important in having a good life in your new home. Locals will help you and respect you just because you are trying. I still make plenty of mistakes (after 40 years) but don’t let that stop me.

For the Manabitas; LEARN ENGLISH. Whatever your profession, or educational level, or political beliefs, learning just a little English will open doors and let you communicate with new people.
