The Happiest Country in the World

For a variety of reasons including the global economy, geopolitics and climate change, many individuals and families from the northern hemisphere are interested in moving to what they see as friendlier locals. Due to a rejection of globalization, less development is seen by some as an advantage rather than a danger. The tide is so strong that entire industries are growing up to help northerners find the best place to relocate.

One of the biggest global web sites and magazine is International Living. For two consecutive years, 2014 and 2015, International Living named Ecuador the #1 retirement destination in the world, using a formula which included ease of obtaining a visa and residency, the health care system, the climate and the cost of living.

In 2019 Ecuador has fallen to #4 on the International Living ranking, behind Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico.  One of the reasons for this is the increasing competition for the foreign exchange earnings that these new residents represent, without damaging the environment and contributing rather than extracting resources. All three of the countries ranked ahead of Ecuador this year have passed specific legislation and regulations making it easier and more attractive for Ex-pats to relocate to their countries. These include special visas for retirees, ease of moving capital for buying or building a home, and direct deposit of their foreign retirement benefits to local banks.

This week another influential global organization called InterNations, with over 3.2 million members, released their ranking of the best places for ex-pats. They use a more complicated rating system which includes a wider range of factors and geographic areas. For example, their methodology includes Quality of Life (leisure options, personal happiness, transportation, health, safety and digital life), Ease of Settling in (feeling at home, friendliness, language), Working Abroad and Family Life (availability/cost of child care and education, quality of education, importance of family in society).

On this list, Ecuador placed #8 out of 172 countries around the world.  It was the highest ranked country in South America; he first three places went to Taiwan, Vietnam and Portugal. Ecuador placed highly in several of the categories: #13 in the world in quality of life, #6 in leisure options, and #14 in health care. Perhaps not surprisingly, it was not among the top 15 countries in the world in Travel & Transportation or in Safety and Security.  However, in the category of “Personal Happiness” Ecuador was rated #1 in the entire world. Congratulations, Ecuador! Despite all our complaints, we are the happiest country in the world this year, according to InterNations.

It just goes to show, everything depends on your point of view. Of course there are problems here, but Ecuadorians who travel and all of us on TV can see how unhappy people are in other countries. We should feel lucky to be in Ecuador. We have a rich culture and unrivaled biodiversity. With a bit of support from the government, ex-pat immigrants and environmental tourism can pave the path to a better future for our unique and beautiful county.
