Los héroes entre nosotros

Si está atrapado en su hogar, luchando con su familia, cansado de la dieta limitada y viendo visiones de los Cuatro Jinetes del Apocalipsis cada vez que revisa sus redes sociales, tómese un momento para olvidarse de sus dificultades personales y pensar en los verdaderos héroes que nos rodean, arriesgando sus vidas todos los días para que el resto de nosotros podamos sobrevivir. Cada día, mientras usted y yo nos acurrucamos en nuestros respectivos hogares, estos héroes salen, con pleno conocimiento de los riesgos, para hacer los trabajos que nadie más puede hacer, y sin los cuales nuestra sociedad colapsaría.

Estoy hablando de los taxistas que no saben si su próximo cliente está infectado y en camino al hospital, o los conductores de reparto  si llevan un paquete impregnado con células de virus. Los empleados de las farmacias, que a pesar de sus máscaras, guantes y un metro de distancia de los clientes, tocan las manos y el dinero y comparten el aire con cientos de clientes. Los trabajadores del servicio de alimentos, que se presentan todos los días para abastecer los estantes y mantener la comida en movimiento para las personas que la necesitan para sobrevivir. La policía que está todos los días haciendo cumplir el toque de queda, entrevistando a los conductores, inspeccionando vehículos y documentos, y los guardias del ejército haciendo lo mismo, pero regresando cada noche a los cuarteles abarrotados en las bases militares sin posibilidad de distanciamiento social.

También me refiero a los científicos y epidemiólogos que están tratando desesperadamente de difundir la información verdadera y desacreditar las mentiras y distorsiones, a menudo frente a los políticos más preocupados por las inversiones y la opinión pública. Reporteros y periodistas, no columnistas como este corresponsal, que escribe desde una cómoda oficina en casa, sino los verdaderos reporteros que están en las calles y en los pasillos del poder para traerle el diario que tiene en sus manos.

Incluso los recolectores de basura que arriesgan sus vidas todos los días para que usted y yo no nos ahoguemos en nuestra propia basura. Pero todos estos héroes deben ocupar un lugar detrás de los verdaderos SUPERhéroes: los médicos, enfermeras y paramédicos de primera línea que realmente interactúan, tocan y toman muestras de personas que SABEN están infectadas con este horrible virus. ¿Puede imaginar el coraje que se necesita para hacer esto día tras día, teniendo siempre en el fondo de su mente la posibilidad de llevarlo a casa a sus seres queridos? La mayoría de los otros trabajadores mencionados, nobles como son, están motivados al menos parcialmente por el hecho de que si no trabajan, sus familias no comen. Pero la gran mayoría de los médicos tienen recursos suficientes para sobrevivir meses sin trabajar; sin embargo, siguen llegando a los hospitales y clínicas, puntos críticos de contagio.

Entonces, mientras nos distraemos con las noticias, algunas verdaderas y otras inventadas solo para sembrar pánico o generar re-tweets y reenvíos, estas personas siguen haciendo trabajos duros y peligrosos como nunca antes. Estas curas y tratamientos falsos no solo son estúpidos, sino peligrosos. En la India, un remedio falso que contiene etanol causó 300 muertes. Quédese con fuentes confiables y recuerde decir una oración por todos esos héroes no apreciados y ángeles no anunciados que arriesgan sus vidas por usted y por mí, todos los días. Dios los bendiga a todos.

The Heroes Among Us

If you are trapped in your home, fighting with your family, tired of the limited diet, and seeing visions of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse every time you check your social media, take a moment to forget about your personal difficulties and think about the true heroes who are all around us, risking their lives every day so that the rest of us can survive. Every day, while you and I huddle in our respective homes, these heroes go out, with full knowledge of the risks, to do the jobs that nobody else can do, and without which our society would collapse.

I am talking about the taxi and delivery drivers, who don’t know if their next client is infected and rushing to the hospital, or a package impregnated with virus cells. The clerks in the pharmacies, who despite their masks, gloves and a meter of distance from the clients, touch hands and money and share the air with hundreds of clients a day. The food service workers, who show up every day to stock the shelves and keep the food moving to the people who need it to survive. The police who are out every day enforcing the curfew, interviewing drivers, inspecting vehicles and documents, and the army guards doing the same thing, but returning each night to crowded barracks on military bases with no chance of social distancing.

I am talking about the scientists and epidemiologists who are trying desperately to disseminate the true information and debunk the lies and distortions, often in the face of politicians more concerned with investments and poll numbers. Reporters and journalists, not columnists like this correspondent, who writes from a comfortable home office, but the real reporters who are out on the streets and the halls of government to bring you the paper you hold in your hands. 

Even the often overlooked garbage collectors are risking their lives every day so that you and I don’t drown in our own garbage. But all of these heroes have to take a place behind the true SUPER-heroes; the front line doctors, nurses and paramedics who are actually interacting with, touching and moving taking samples from people who they KNOW are infected with this horrible virus.  Can you image the courage it takes to do this day after day, always in the backs of your mind the chance you could bring it home to your loved ones? Most of the other workers mentioned, noble as they are, are at least partially motivated by the fact that if they don’t work their families don’t eat. But most of the doctors have enough resources that they could survive months without working – yet they keep on coming in to the hospitals and clinics, contagion hotspots.

So while we distract ourselves with the news, some true and some invented just to cause panic or generate retweets and forwards, these people are still hard at work, dangerous as never before. These fake cures and treatments are not only stupid, but dangerous. In India, a fake remedy consisting of ethanol caused 300 deaths.  Stick to reliable sources, and remember to say a prayer for all of those unheralded heroes out there risking their lives for you and me, every day.
